SDNP Pakistan's initiative of providing offline email services
to the general public was a pioneering one in the country. This
was the first ever initiative which introduced the culture of
information dissemination and information sharing in the country.
With the passage of time, SDNP launched five email nodes in
the main cities throughout Pakistan including Islamabad, Karachi,
Peshawar, Lahore and Quetta. This email system used store and
forward technique for distribution of emails.
Until the end of 1996 when big ISPs came in with online Internet
services, SDNP was by far the largest network in the country.
SDNP not only provided the email service but also arranged free
trainings and seminars to the general public on weekly basis
on the effective use of email, training on software and sharing
the benefits of ICTs. This service was used by people from all
walks of life inlcuding Government agencies, Non-governmental
organizations, industry, educational institutions and individuals.
This email operation was entirely based on Linux, an open source
software suite. With the introduction of online Internetworking
Technologies in the country, this email service gotten obsolete
but still a number of development sector organizations find
this medium of communication relevant to their work. Currently,
this email services is extensively used by the organizations
from Afghanistan, working for reconstruction & development
of Afghanistan. Even though, with the latest advancement in
the information technology, this email service is still operational
and serving the development cause not only within the country
but also in Afghanistan.
