Revolutionary tools of communication enthrall Taleem Foundtion in Quetta May 25, 2001

SDNP's Quetta team believes in keeping the local community on their hi-tech toes. So on 25th May 2001, a training workshop on "The use of Internet and Email" was arranged by SDNP for Taleem Foundtion. Fifteen teachers and staff members participated in the event.

Taleem Foundation is an NGO working in the far-flung areas of Pakistan. Its main sphere of operation is providing food and quality primary education among the marginalized sections of Balochistan's society. It has eight elementary schools in remote districts like Kohlu, Kila Saifullah, Zhob, Loralai, Mastung, Sui, Muslim Bagh and Pishin. They aim to promote academic, educational and research activities through the establishment and operation of educational institutions. It spreads gender awareness among the social fabric of the Pakistani community; and educates the masses in nature's conservation and the environment's protection.

SDNP Quetta's City Coordinator, Mr. Jan Muhammad began by elaborating on IUCN/SDNP's initiative in promoting ICT's for development, their potential use as a tool for enviromental awareness and for information exchange with the 'global village'. Ms. Zarin Syed highlighted the significance of the Internet and email as the most revolutionary modes of modern communication to date; the origin of the Internet, its structure, usefulness, and mechanics involved.

The hands-on session held the audience spellbound. Mr. Jan Muhammad assisted the eager participants in connecting to the web; creating and opening an email account; sending an email; and browsing different websites related to Balochistan. News sites like the daily Jung and Dawn, and popular search engines were explored to learn ways of effectively gathering specific information. Both sessions were followed by queries from interested participants. They felt that the workshop had helped them to experience the Internet's information explosion firsthand. Every one was exited to use the Internet practically and getting in touch with people from around the world.
