Local
information content about Pakistan is steadily growing on
the Internet. To provide an impetus to this movement, SDNP
conducted a three-day workshop from 29-31 May 2001 on "Advanced
Web Authoring for Online Databases". This workshop
provided development sector organizations interested in
bringing useful data online a unique opportunity to benefit
from the technical skills required to web-enable their databases.
Participating organizations included:
1.
Pakistan Literacy Commission (PLC)
2. The Network
for Consumer Protection
3. Women in
Credit Information Resource Centre (WCIRC)
4. Society
for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC)
5. Asia Foundation
6. Strengthening
Participatory Organizations (SPO)
7. Rural Social
Development Programme (RSDP)
8. Pakistan
Institute of Development Economics (PIDE)
9. National
Book Foundation (NBF)
10. Environmental Rehabilitation in NWFP and Punjab (ERNP)
11. Consumer Rights Commission of Pakistan (CRCP)
12. National Energy Conservation Centre (ENERCON)
13. Pakistan Energy and Environment Management Centre (PEEMAC).
Speaking
on the occasion, Mr. Hasan A. Rizvi, Project Director SDNP
Pakistan, said that by showcasing important socio-economic
indicators via their website databases, these organizations
can facilitate policy planners and researchers in the government,
national and international organizations, to formulate appropriate
action plans for the uplift of the society and development
of Pakistan. He also emphasized the need for developing
a culture of information sharing, without which the true
power of information for the benefit of the society cannot
be actualized. Mr. Rizvi then distributed certificates among
the participants, who felt that they were now well equipped
with the technical and specialized skills required to bring
their public domain databases online.
