Throughout history mankind has stored its accumulated knowledge
in libraries. This knowledge forms the basis for our differing
cultures and provides the stepping stones to our future
advancement and development. These institutions have to
date been kept available by the meticulous sorting, storing,
indexing, and preservation that still characterizes library
work-work that will carry, in the electronic environment,
challenges yet unknown.
In this context, SDNP Karachi organized a two-day workshop
on "Basic Web Publishing/Authoring for Library Staff",
on June 26-27, 2001 at the Brain Tech Institute of Information
Technology. The initiative attempts to facilitate the librarians
to get information about their libraries and collections
online; and correspondingly, assist users to access the
pool of knowledge provided by libraries, universities and
research centres via the Internet. Representatives from
libraries / resource centres of the following fifteen institutions
participated in this workshop:

The workshop conducted by Mr. Mobin-ur-Rehman, provided
the participants with hands-on training to put information
about their respective libraries / resource centres online;
as well as to develop web-based catalogs of their information
assets using relevant software applications. Participants
were further introduced to the fundamentals of advanced
programming in online databases. This workshop will increase
the ability of the libraries to work towards promoting their
role in society in ensuring an informed citizenry.
