Talk about professional pioneers! SDNP Peshawar's team successfully
established NWFP's first-ever Cyber Community Centre (CCC)
in Usterzai Payan, a remote area of Kohat on 28th June 2001.
The occasion was also marked by launching of the district
website (http://www.kohat.sdnpk.org)
for Kohat.
This informative website showcases Kohat's ancient history,
flora, fauna and customs of the people's way of life through
their cultural festivals; the most famous of which is the
Khattak dance. The first historical mention of Kohat is
found in the memoirs of Emperor Babar who visited Kohat
in 1505 AD. The total area of the district is 2545 square
kilometers. Its topography is dominated by mountains, hills
and the Kohat valley, which is an agriculturally rich area.
Summers and winters are extreme. Kohat has an old tradition
of sending its young men to the armed forces. The government
service, agricultural activities, transport, business and
arms manufacturing are major sources of earning in the region.
Together with the administrative setup, it provides rich
statistical data on agriculture, industry, education, population,
employment and health facilities. Important historical places
include Darra; Khushal Garh; Kohat town; Lachi; Shakardarra
and Tanda Dam.
The CCC was inaugurated by Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, Provincial
Minister for Education, Culture and Tourism, while the district
website was launched by Mr. Kamran Zeb, Deputy Commissioner
Kohat. Gilani lauded the role of IUCN-SDNP for taking such
a bold initiative meant for the socio-economic uplift of
the rural areas. He pledged his all-out support in pushing
forward all such ventures relating to CCCs.
An Internet awareness raising workshop arranged on this
occasion was attended by around 75 participants belonging
to various segments of the local community. Despite a big
variation in age, all participants whether young or old,
took equal interest in the proceedings of the workshop.
Some were keen that such CCCs with so much technological
potential should be established in their respective communities
as well.
Mr. Ahmad Raza, Managing Director, Al-Asar Academy, Usterzai
Payan Kohat, provided active support for the establishment
of this CCC.
