On 13 June 2001 SDNP Karachi and IUCN's NGO/CSU unit scored
yet another pioneering initiative by established Sindh's
first Cyber Community Centre (CCC) in the province, at Mithi,
Tharparkar, in collaboration with an NGO, Baahn Beli at
its computer training centre.
The Cyber Community Centre will serve the local community
by providing them the opportunity to access rich information
resources available on the Internet. In addition, the local
population of Mithi city will be able to effectively communicate
with rest of the country and the world using the centre's
facility. CCC is an innovative idea and would not only provide
swift information and communication access to the local
population living in remote and rural areas, but would also
result in their social and economic development.
SDNP and NGO/CSU unit also arranged a seminar on the "Role
of Information and Communication Technologies in Development"
in collaboration with Baahn Beli at Mithi on the same day.
SDNP staff conducted a comprehensive technical session on
the Internet, e-mail, mailing lists, discussion forum and
search techniques. Later, the resource personnel answered
the participants' queries.
Speakers on this occasion highlighted the importance of
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in development,
and discussed possible potentials and constraints in the
Pakistani context. Mr. Sadiq Rajar ADM, Tharparkar was the
chief guest on this occasion. Mr. Tahir Quraishi, Head of
IUCN's coastal ecosystem unit and Dr. Kolachi, Head Baahn
Beli, Hyderabad office also addressed the audience.
A comprehensive website on Tharparkar district
was also launched on this occasion. This website, prepared
by SDNP-IUCN in collaboration with local NGOs, contains
vital information about Tharparkar district. Its rich information
will prove useful for local communities and policy
planners at different levels as well. Local content about
Tharparkar and related matters are also available in local
language i.e. Sindhi on this website. The website's address
