SDNP Quetta conducted an awareness training workshop on
Internet and Email for the local school children and faculty
of Youth Welfare Organization (YWO) on 27th June 2001, at
Greenland Computer and Language School, Khuzdar. Forty children
and 5 teachers from 4 government and private schools attended
the event.
YWO is a local NGO working for education and computer advocacy
program for different schools in the districts of Kalat
Division (Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbela, Awaran and Kharan). During
this workshop 3 other resource persons were also invited
from UET Khuzdar, MCB Khuzdar and Balochistan Residential
College, Khuzdar.
Mr. Jan Muhammad, City Coordinator SDNP Quetta explained
the role of IUCN/SDNP in promoting Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs) for development within the Pakistani
context. He said that the capacity building programmes designed
for training were based keeping in mind the needs of the
people who benefited from them.
He then went on to elaborate upon the advantages and importance
of Internet and E-mail to facilitate communication and access
information. The origins of the Internet, its structure
and hardware required were discussed, and participants'
curious queries answered.
The participants felt that the Internet is a very useful
media for them as it brought a world of information to their
desks. Everyone participated proactively in using the Internet
practically and in getting in touch with people from all
over the world.
In the end, Mr. Abdullah Baloch of YWO thanked SDNP/IUCN
for organizing such a useful and interesting workshop for
the schools' pupils and their teachers. YWO also requested
SDNP for technical support in establishing a Cyber Community
Centre (CCC) at Khuzdar.
